LASIK Eye Surgery - Without The Blade!
Despite my last post you know that LASIK is a fairly low-risk corrective eye surgery technique, right?
Well one area where most of the complications come up is when the knife, called a microkeratome, is used to cut a flap in the cornea. Other than it being a bit invasive, I mean it is cutting your cornea right! It also might not be a clean cut (ie might not line-up with your cornea), it might not heal properly, could get an infection and the recovery period can be long too.
Enter the IntraLase Laser
With the new IntraLase laser, LASIK surgeons no longer have to use a metal knife to cut a flap in your cornea! They just use the computer guided IntraLase and cut a flap that perfectly matches the shape of your cornea.
Then they can continue with the eximer laser to reshape your cornea by ablating (removing) some tissue from your cornea. So with bladeless LASIK the surgeon actually uses two (2) lasers: the new IntraLase and the eximer laser to complete the surgery.
The Benefits of Bladeless LASIK
So the benefits are more precise cutting of the corneal flap, not using a metal knife, which could cut with slightly jagged edges and/or would not get quite the shape of your cornea when creating the flap.
